HCA Hospice Care – Video Sharing

I did some research on statistics of video sharing.

Based on http://video-share-review.toptenreviews.com/ we could see that youtube has the highest amount of traffic flow. It is free and has the best of everything compared to other video sharing sites. It allows the user to upload a video that is as big as 1gb.

HCA Hospice Care

The organization that my group is doing on is the HCA Hospice Care.

The HCA Hospice Care (HCA) is registered charity that provides comfort and support to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families. They do this through a hospice home care service and a care centre. More than 25,000 patients have treated by HCA since it was founded in 1986.

They provide services such as home care, day care centre and psychological support. Any patient with life-limiting illness can apply for a admission for free.

Volunteers are welcome too. They welcome any volunteers to help them in any ways. The volunteers can choose to go up and close with the patients or just moral support the families and patients.

They welcome donors too. As their services are free, they need donors to donate money for them to function.

Lecture – New Media Landscape

Yesterday, we had a talk about New Media Landscape from Lionel Chin, co-founder of Ripplewerkz. Ripplewerkz is an all in one design house which offers high quality Web, Blog, Print, and Corporate ID development. The company had done many webpages or blogskins for example XiaXue’s blog, Nuffnang, Her velvet vase and even Ippudo sg. He also did mention that such webpages prices can ranged between 5k to 10k SGD. Websites are sold as a whole and not by pages.

He mentioned the changes in  web. In web 1.0, it used to be just one way of communication. Whereby only the creator of the web post things up  and show their customer. While the improved version is web 2.0, whereby there’s a two way communication. The creator and the customer could communicate to each other through the website. For example, some websites have feedbacks or blogspot have comments and tagboards.

He also stated that if someone have a blackberry or iphone they could massage to places like facebook or twitter to update their status. One of the special feature his company made for XiaXue was “Photo of the Moment”. It works by, XiaXue will just have to send the photo to them and it will automaticly update the photos. It has the same concept as the twitter or facebook massages. This is convinient and do not waste time trying to upload in some photo gallary and then use the image code to update.

Someone asked questions about “Is it good to be a freelancer after graudating or find a agency?”. He said that it’s best to become a freelancer while we are studying. I agree to this point as we students do not have much time, thus doing freelancing during our free time can increase our working experience. After graudating then find a agency may be easier as we have the experience.

At such a young age and his already a co-founder of a great company that did many great works could inspire us to strive for our future. It really gave us much hope and let us know what is it like outside school protection.

Creating Awareness

Children’s Cancer Foundation(CCF) has helped more than 1,100 children and their families since its inception in 1992. CCF is an independent VWO that helps children with cancer 18 years & below. CCF has 2 Family Support Centres (FSCs) where counselling and other related activities take place. The FSCs are at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital and at National University Hospital.

Many people do not think that children could even have cancer at such young age. Thus, in order to create an awareness about such problems, advertising or events are needed.

Advertising such as through the internet. As many people now are surfing internet most of the time. Small advertisements at the side of webpages can deal much impact on young parents that are surfing the net and thus making an awarness.Advertising through television advertisment could attract anyone of age as most people would spend some amount of time watching the television.

They could advertise through popular new media social networking tools, such as twitter, facebook, myspace, windows live messenger or youtube. This could create an awareness amongest the teenagers and look out for early stages.

National Archives of Singapore(NAS)

National Archives was created in 1934, individual government agencies were in charge of maintaining their own records. Some took great care of the materials, but many did not. Congress established the National Archives in 1934 to centralize federal record keeping, with the Archivist of the United States as its chief administrator.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation’s record keeper. Of all documents and materials created in the course of business conducted by the United States Federal government, only 1%-3% are so important for legal or historical reasons that they are kept forever. They preserve records of a certain value, be it videos or books and allows public to view them.

Archives Conservation Laboratory are where teared or suffered from insect and fungi infestation paper documents will be preserved. Records Management Services are the preservation of important public records and management for civil service. Image Preservation Laboratory are where images taken from books and papers are scanned and placed onto microfilm and digital media. The Audio-Visual Archives and Exhibition are where videos and sounds of Singapore history are being captured and preserved. Videos such as the National Day. The Oral History Centre is where influential people and people who have status in Singapore’s history are interviewed and recorded.

NAS uses a2o to allow public communication and education.

Lit Review

New media has enabled us to share files over the internet, this is called file-sharing. There are many file-sharing sites which enables
us to upload or download things on the internet. However, an illegal trend has been spotted. Threat report says the number of new
file-sharing sites are hosting illegal copyrighted material ever since a Swdish judge ordered an ISP to cut off bandwidth to BitTorrent tracker site The Priate Bay 3 months ago.

Photobucket

Such trend could be due to the economic downturn, or technology is so advance that it is easier to download a movie for free rather than
going to the cinema to watch it. Having a decent boardband in all homes are easy these days, thus with the magic of BitTorrent, people
can download a 700MB nXVID movie to their desktops not more than 20 minutes. People will only go to the cinema if only the movie is worth
the money to pay for. The movie tickets being 10 dollars and above does not help the situation. In fact it even worsen the problem as people
sees as paying for the boardband fee over the year is much more worth it than going to the cinema.

The Pirate Bay proves how difficult it is to remove copyrighted material once it is up on the internet. Even if the website is down, database
of content can be kept in the HDD’s of BitTorrent users around the globe. This enable them to restore the database after they found another ISP.
Even if the website is down, the users can upload what they have on another website, thus the copyrighted material is still on the internet.
On the other hand, The Pirate Bay was able to relocate quickly and was up and running within 24hours after its down.

BitTorrent was not the only way for file-sharing. FTP sites are capable of file-sharing too. Someone on an FTP site can post copyrighted material,
then another person can directly download from that FTP site. This is an never ending cycle of file-sharing. Even usenet operates on a
multi-server basis where content is populated over several servers around the world. Copyright holders are fighting a losing battle against
file-sharing sites as they shut down a site and many more appeared to replace that site.
